KDE today is the best comprehensive free software desktop environment in the world. We offer a complete set of object-oriented APIs and the runtime environment to develop desktop applications on X. We have come far, and KDE has defined the idea of desktop environments on Unix in the first place, but are we up to date and to the future?

We will have a closer look at the two main other platforms widely used, Java - especially J2EE - and the .NET framework. The comparison will include languages and language features, API style and comprehensiveness, standardization and typical uses.

At the end, strengths and weaknesses of KDE on Unix will be worked out, along with a number of suggestions for future development.
