This paper will give an overview on KDE´s support for partially sighted users. Basically the paper will consist of three parts.
The first part will with give an overview on the relevant settings in the KDE Control Center. It will explore which settings can be used in order to increase the support for partially sighted people and it will explain where we need changes in KDE both because because some needs are not covered yet and because some settings are duplicated in many applications.
The second part will analyse currently available screen magnifiers. It will cover KMagnifier, the screen magnifier of today´s KDE Accessibility Project, but it will also cover Gnopernicus from the GNOME Accessibility Project, and a new screen magnifier that is currently developed by the author of this paper.
The third part will give a preview on the potentials of Qt 4.0´s accessibility framework. It will explain how that framework can be used for writing both full-featured screen magnifiers and screen readers.
Gunnar Schmidt
Gunnar Schmidt is a student of computer science at the University of Paderborn. Since 2002 Gunnar Schmidt is a developer of the KDE Accessibility Project. He is currently writing his diploma thesis which involves the development of a full-featured screen magnifier for Linux.
